What is SGB and how to invest in it?

SGB stands for Sovereign Gold Bond. It is a financial instrument issued by the Government of India as a means for individuals to invest in gold without the need to physically own and store the precious metal. Here's how to invest in Sovereign Gold Bonds:

  1. Eligibility:

    • Individuals, including resident individuals, HUFs, trusts, universities, and charitable institutions, are eligible to invest in SGBs.

  2. Issuance Period:

    • Sovereign Gold Bonds are typically issued in specified tranches announced by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  3. Application:

    • To invest in SGBs, you can apply through authorized banks, designated post offices, or online through the RBI's website or designated bank websites during the subscription period.
  4. KYC Documentation:

    • Ensure you have valid Know Your Customer (KYC) documents, such as PAN card, Aadhar card, and proof of address, which are usually required for the application.
  5. Subscription Amount:

    • Determine the amount you want to invest in Sovereign Gold Bonds. The minimum and maximum investment amounts are specified for each tranche.
  6. Pricing:

    • The price of a Sovereign Gold Bond is typically based on the prevailing market price of gold, as determined by the RBI.
  7. Interest Rate:

    • SGBs offer a fixed interest rate, which is usually paid semi-annually. The rate is specified in the bond issuance announcement.
  8. Tenure:

    • Sovereign Gold Bonds have a fixed tenure, usually ranging from 8 to 12 years. You can choose a tenure that suits your investment horizon.
  9. Nomination:

    • You can nominate a person to receive the bond proceeds in case of your demise.
  10. Allotment and Holding:

    • After applying and making the payment, you will receive a digital certificate or a physical bond certificate. The bonds can be held in a demat account or as a physical certificate.
  11. Interest and Redemption:

    • Interest on SGBs is credited to your bank account semi-annually. Upon maturity, the principal amount is paid to you in cash, and you can also choose to redeem the bonds before maturity in specific tranches.
  12. Taxation:

    • The interest earned on Sovereign Gold Bonds is taxable as per your income tax slab. However, capital gains tax is not applicable if you hold the bond until maturity.

Sovereign Gold Bonds are considered a safe and convenient way to invest in gold, and they offer the dual benefit of gold price appreciation and interest income. However, before investing, it's essential to read the bond issuance circular carefully, consider your investment goals, and consult with a financial advisor if needed to ensure it aligns with your overall financial plan.

who care when you dare When I was growing up, my father said something to me I will never forget, “Son, when you were born, you cried while the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a way that when you die the world cries while you rejoice.” We live in an age when we have forgotten what life is all about. We can easily put a person on the Moon, but we have trouble walking across the street to meet a new neighbor. We can fire a missile across the world with pinpoint accuracy, but we have trouble keeping a date with our children to go to the library. We have e-mail, fax machines and digital phones so that we can stay connected and yet we live in a time where human beings have never been less connected. We have lost touch with our humanity. We have lost touch with our purpose. We have lost sight of the things that matter the most. And so, as you start this book, I respectfully ask you, Who will cry when you die? How many lives will you touch while you have the privilege to walk ...
